He replied "Yes I can but I don't want to."
Perfectly reasonable answer to the question that i asked but not to the request that was implied ...

Andy October 21, 2005 08:39 PM PDT I'm not sure you've done anything badly wrong there. "Can you" is a very common colloquialism for "Could you" but if you need to make it absolutely clear I suppose adding "please' might help.
