Questions again!

Just said to J "can you put your shoes in the shoe cabinet?"

He replied "Yes I can but I don't want to."

Perfectly reasonable answer to the question that i asked but not to the request that was implied ...

When am I going to learn!!!

A cabinet to put shoes in! seriously - we have it to keep the shoes tidy as our hall measures less than 9ft square - not a lot of room for a shoe rack.

I'm not sure you've done anything badly wrong there. "Can you" is a very common colloquialism for "Could you" but if you need to make it absolutely clear I suppose adding "please' might help.

What is a shoe cabinet?
